Students Joseph Chang and Jonathan Monro Named 2025 Vanier Scholars

Published: 15 July 2025

Two exceptional doctoral candidates from 每日探花's Schulich School of Music, Joseph Chang (DMus) and Jonathan Munro (DMus), have been awarded the prestigious Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship听in recognition of their innovative research.听This award provides up to $50,000 per year for up to three years, supporting outstanding students who demonstrate academic excellence, research potential, and leadership.听

Joseph Chang is pursuing doctoral studies in Percussion Performance. His project, 鈥淎nalysis, Orchestration, and Performance of Synthesized Percussion Sounds from Music Composed for the Nintendo Entertainment System from 1983 to 1990,鈥 explores the creative ingenuity of early video game composers.听

鈥淢y research explores how 8-bit video game composers for the NES created percussion sounds within technical constraints. During this period, seminal composers diversified their coding techniques to emulate a wide range of percussion instruments. I analyze these developments and reinterpret them on acoustic percussion instruments 鈥 bringing to life the sounds they originally sought to emulate.鈥澨

Chang credits the supportive environment at Schulich for helping bring his听project听to fruition:听

鈥淚 have had tremendous support to earn this scholarship within the Schulich School of Music, with many professors who offered听a generous听amount of time to see my proposal听to听fruition. The Vanier听scholarship allows听me to immerse fully in my research, and moreover, to help share my findings with others through presentations and publishing opportunities.鈥澨

Jonathan Monro, a doctoral student in Opera Performance,听is investigating the intersection between communication and performance in opera. His project,听鈥淗ow opera artists鈥 perceptions of rehearsal communication might influence performance quality,鈥 was inspired by real-world issues within the opera industry.听

鈥淎fter reports of abuse surfaced in the opera industry, I felt compelled to investigate how opera directors, conductors, and singers perceive rehearsal communication to influence their performance quality. I鈥檓 deeply听honoured听and humbled to receive the Vanier Scholarship. After 33 years in the music performance and theatre industry, it is a true privilege to have their support, as well as the support of the faculty at 每日探花. I look forward to continuing to work on my thesis.鈥澨

Congratulations听to Joseph and Jonathan on their outstanding achievement. Their research reflect not only scholarly excellence but a commitment to innovation and impact in the field of music.听
